Official Statement from Honda Malaysia : SRS Fatality

Statement from Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.
Re: Another Confirmed Rupture of Takata Driver’s Airbag Inflator in Malaysia
on June 26, 2016
Statement date: June 27, 2016

Honda has confirmed that the Takata single stage (SDI) driver’s airbag inflator
ruptured in a crash on June 26, 2016 in Malaysia. The crash resulted in the tragic death of the driver. No official cause of death has been yet determined. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the driver during this difficult time.

Honda has confirmed during an inspection with the Royal Malaysia Police that the Takata single stage (SDI) driver’s airbag inflator ruptured in the crash of a 2005 Honda City on June 26, 2016 in Selangor state. The vehicle involved in this crash was included in a Malaysian Product Update (recall) announced on May 21, 2015, requiring replacement of the SDI inflator of the Takata driver’s front airbag.

Since 2015, this vehicle involved in this crash has been included in both driver’s
Takata airbag inflator and passenger’s Takata airbag inflator recalls. Three mailed recall notices related to those recalls were sent to the owner. Our records indicate that the recall repair was never completed.

Honda is communicating with representative of the driver’s family in an effort to
resolve their remaining concerns. Out of respect for the family, Honda will not
provide any personal information.

Very Important Note to Honda Owners
Honda Malaysia continues to urge owners of Honda vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator product recall to get their vehicles repaired at authorized dealers as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check their vehicles’ product recall status at www.honda.com.my or call our toll free number at 1-800-88-2020 or visit any Honda authorized dealers.

Advice from TOVA
It is very very strongly advised that Honda owner checks for whether their car is affected by the recall and if so, to have the airbag replaced IMMEDIATELY. This is not longer wise to "plan" to do so "ASAP". ASAP is no longer immediately enough. Please take action NOW !

It is now possible to check for recalls online via the Honda Malaysia official website at http://www.honda.com.my. We will be publishing a short step by step article on how to do so.

Hi Rusdi,
Below is the response when I forwarded your concern to the relevant people:
=============================================================
Affected models have been listed in our recall list and please refer to our website for the affected models.

Link: http://www.honda.com.my/service_maintenance/product_update
=====================================================

When you go to the page in the link, you will be prompted to key in your car's chassis number (or VIN as it is also called). Honda Malaysia will check for your actual unit/car for the recall in question. If the inquiry does not indicate a need for the recall, then your unit/car has been vetted through by Honda Malaysia to be not affected by the recall.

We (TOVA) will be publishing a step-by-step guide on how to use the page above to check for your specific unit/car to see if it is involved in any recall (it covers not only the Takata airbag recall but also other previous ones as well). If you have any difficulties using the page above, please do check back here tomorrow as our new article will be up by then (I am just selecting some photos for the article).

Hope this helps relieve your concern/worries.
