Honda's New Compact SUV: VEZEL

Honda is riding the wave of the new model launches to conclude an amazing 2013, delivering yet another new model. This time round, it is the long awaited compact SUV, the VEZEL. There has been no answer to the Toyota Rush/Daihatsu Terios and the newer coupe-like Nissan Juke segment of cars from Honda for many years. We saw the potential challenger in the Honda Fit Twist, based on the GE platform but it is only exclusively for Brazil.

The VEZEL sports Honda's latest design theme "Solid Wing Face" and the latest Earthdreams Sport Hybrid drivetrain i-DCD. While there is no news on what models the 1.5 litre VTEC Turbo engine would be installed to, CEO Ito has mentioned that the US-bound VEZEL is likely to be equipped with a turbocharged engine. With this, I believe VEZEL will develop into a challenger to the Juke turbo. I am happy to see the tuned up version of the Sport Hybrid drivetrain in the Vezel as this drivetrain is expected to deliver a sportier drive through the dual clutch system.

Reading the specifications of the Fit Hybrid already sent me itching for a test drive of the latest drivetrain, which again has been a long wait too. With direct injection and the hybrid system, this realized maximum system output of 112 KW (152 PS)*9 that is equivalent to that of a 2.0 L engine and higher than the Fit Hybrid! The latest hybridization plans from Honda certainly seemed to have upped the developmental results in this aspect over Toyota. The key determinant of success would be the real world fuel efficiency results.

At this point, I am excited and optimistic that Honda would achieve success with the new Sport Hybrid drivetrains as it is in line with Honda's mission of delivering the joy of driving. Honda's product plans have also become much more globalized as reflected in the closer launch dates for various countries for new models such as Odyssey and City. Reinforcing this is the news by CEO Ito that a version of Vezel will head for the US in the very near future.

Honda got us excited in the late 2013, and hopefully the excitement can be kept all the way to 2015 when the flagship supercar NSX will be launched alongside the S660. That will definitely be a key milestone for Ito's leadership. Meanwhile, let's savour the VEZEL.

The Honda Official Press Release is attached below.

Here's Mr. Matsumoto's this year's review. He is the Leader of GT500 project.(this is a brief trans.)

As he mentioned before (early his GT report), he decided to move the side-mounted radiators to the front and the one-pipe rear exhaust to the sides because the size of intake inlet had been enlarged in 2013 regulation.
Initially the side radiators behind the front wheels were chosen to better Z-momentum (turning) by moving the heavy radiator and its water behind the front wheels and closer to the center of the car. They did succeed but the car's center of gravity went up. So in consequences their racing teams had tough time setting up cars for the races.
By moving them back to the front they were able to achieve a lower C of G and make it smaller and lighter (less water). They did loose a bit of the Z-momentum but able to keep it minimum.

Moving the rear exhaust pipe to sides was more interesting. They knew that they would get the better upper power band and responses because of the shorter side exhausts with the bigger intake plate than the longer tail pipe with smaller intake plate when they had the better lower torque band before.
Interest thing was the hot side exhaust gas would affect car's aerodynamics. Fast moving hot exhaust gas actually would move along air on the side faster. So routing the air flow from the front bottom of the car to sides next the exhaust would make it move along faster thus increase the front down force. So they had found in their wind tunnel test.

Thing was it changes depend on where the side exhausts are placed between the two axles. If placed right behind the front wheels it would help the aerodynamics better. If placed farther back it would help engine power better. The difference with the engine tuning of '12 was 40ps!
One was called 'aero-preferred' (aero select) and the other was called 'power preferred' (power select). They couldn't tell which was better for the drivers thus they talked into their racing teams to try both to see.
Despite 40ps difference, most drivers preferred the 'aero select' because it's better to handle. So then their engine-ers were now able to start to retuned the engine with the 'aero select' side exhausts.
Something like that.

I've noticed there is a thread on Honda F1 at TOV. I'd like to make a comment even nobody is listening.
Honda needs to justify their participation into F1 or any other activities as a commercial automaker. It's so set up by Soichiro and Fujisawa because they didn't want any one CEO to do things just for his personal glory and pride. So their reasons for F1 last time were to learn chassis technology, engine manufacturing technology where they could change or adapt the manufacturing process quickly and of course to educational experience for their new young engineers. Engine technology itself wasn't as much important because F! was so ahead or different from engines on the read cars they could applied to. Tht's not to say they didn't work hard on their engines to win though.

1999, they started with Mr. Postlethwaite designing the car RA099. unfortunately he suffered a heart attack and passed away.
They had a deal with the BAR. Their or Honda's understanding was that they could participate in development of the chassis too. But Jack Villeneuve's manager wanted Honda to just supply the engines and nothing else. They complained Honda's updates were too slow to come because Honda changed its manufacturing processes to update instead of one off hand fabricated updated engines that is the norm in F1. By the way during this time Honda introduced the carbon-fiber and seamless transmission first and it was quickly banned by FIA. The reason was Honda couldn't compete with Renault's traction control. Every time Renault upshifts Honda cars were left behind so they made it seamless shift.
Speaking of the first in F1, they were the first to use the engine block as a stress member of the chassis in their first F!. I think they were also the first to use telemetry in testing and the races in their 2nd F1.

BAR used Reynard chassis first and moved on to Geoff willis who was an experienced F1 chassis designer. I don't think they had a wind tunnel though.
When Honda took over BAR 100% in 2006 RA106 was evolution of previous cars. It was nothing revolutionary.
After Honda acquired their own wind tunnel and their own people ran it to learn, to get experience. It was said they calibrated a bit off (one story). The one I believe is they didn't have enough experience in F1 to transfer or translate the data they got from the wind tunnel to the actual race cars that run, accelerate, brake and turn. One of their senior suspension engineer said that F1 is completely different from any other auto racing. You have to have the aerodynamics right and design or set up the suspension to "support" the aerodynamics to do its job.

After they got the wind tunnel and designed a revolutionary chassis, RA107 but probably because of their inexperience and not enough time or maybe younger generations of engineers it was a disaster. They knew they were right but just couldn't make it work in real in time. So they were forced to revert back to modify RA106 to RA108. It was better than RA106 and clearly better than RA107 but it was ordinary.

Now , comes Mr. Brawn thanks to Mr. Fry. He trusted Honda engineers, I guess, so he gave them one full year to develop the car. The engineers went back to RA107 and made RA109 that became Brawn's championship winning car.
Honda is in F1 to win but also they are in to learn, to get experiences for specially their younger generations. Now I feel better I rant out.

On SuperGT, to the down and under at TOV, the new regulation requires to use the standard chassis for every teams. The chassis is designed for FR layouts. Honda has to modify it to fit their MR layout within the regulations. Regulation of the MR layout wasn't finalized when they made the 1st GT concept car. They were still negotiating on small details at the time. I'm not sure if they got finalized the commercial version of eNSX by that time either. Shape of the upper body from the commercial one is heavily regulated too. So they did have to start a bit later than other teams with FR cars. So back off! Put some shrimps on the berbie instead meanwhile..

I can't believe this. The pansy on the barbie is at it again. He thinks he can get away with a smiling face?
I'm not familiar with MotorGT or Nakamoto-san at all but I have something to say. It clearly shows the other teams whether it's in MotorGT, in F1 or in SuperGT can't compete with Honda without cheating some. That's what you get when you are the best. I'm sure he, they will manage to do well eventually just like in F1. Honda will prevail as always as in always.

I see MalcomlR is at it with his usual pseudoscience and deceits again at TOV.
If he wants to take on the Skepticalscience.com why wouldn't he just go there and post his comments? They have their comment section and anybody can post it. Just though it is run by the real scientists so his pseudoscience will not work there. He knows it.

CR-V0 said...

Malcolm is still at it. Mr. Malcolm Einstein Robert claims CO2 cools, contrary to the scientific knowledge of greenhouse effect fact of almost 200 years.
Bha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!
He says so just because NASA said on their news. He didn't understand what the news of SABER study was. It's what happening in the Thermosphere.

CR-V0 said...

Darn! I didn't know we can use all the coal, oil and natural gas under ground. It won't raise temperature no more than 1.2C, so said the man who put man on moon. It sounds so comforting like God is taking care of us all.
It has been up 0.7 or 8C so far for last 180 years so another 0.5 or 6C for all these coal, oil and gas under ground? Did he know about Mr. Malcolm Einstein. Robert though? CO2 cools the atmosphere. More CO2 means cooler earth. Doesn't the NASA engineer know that?

"The Specific Heat of CO2 is 0.80 meaning it absorbs and releases heat faster than does standard air. Doesn’t this mean that carbon dioxide can only enhance cooling, not warming?

Don’t gases that absorb radiation therefore cool the Earth? "

Bha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!! ..... stop it my stomach hurts, please.

CR-V9 said...

Bha ha ha ha ha ha ........ I can't believe it.

Mr. Malcolm Einstein Robert at TOV didn't disappoint me. Listen to this. You can't believe it.
"Unlike fraudsters like Gavin Schmidt and James Hansen in NASA, the real scientists and engineers in NASA who put men on the moon and brought them safely back to Earth don't believe in BS AGW: http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-London/2014/03/08/Earth-is-safe-from-global-warming-say-the-men-who-put-man-on-the-moon "

Unlike his pseudoscience they at least acknowledge the science of greenhouse effect. I don't know if he can read or intentionally lying? He should understand science because he said he has a degree in science. Nobody can be that pathetic though.
